How To: Properly Care For Your Rug

FacebookPinterestEmail

Rugs are more than just a piece used to cover up a space. They are an investment in elegance, comfort, and a way to show your personal style and anchor a space. Whether it’s an intricately handcrafted rug or a plush wool carpet, these pieces add warmth and character to every space. Maintaining their beauty & preserving their value is essential—let’s explore some of our expert rug care tips on caring for luxury rugs, ensuring they remain stunning for years to come.

Vacuuming

Regular cleaning and vacuuming are essential—but going about it in the correct way is crucial. We recommend vacuums without beater bars if possible. If not, set your vacuum on the highest pile setting possible. If your vacuum has variable power settings, set on low. Brooms, manual sweepers, and handheld options are incredible ways to clean your rugs as well. Pro rug care tip—vacuum the full length of the rug, turning and repeating to the next area, rather than using a back and forth motion.

Rotate Periodically

To prevent uneven wear and fading, rotate your rug every few months, especially if it is in a high traffic area in your home or exposed to sunlight on the regular. Rotating the rug ensures that it wears evenly, prolonging its lifespan and maintaining its appearance.

Spot Cleaning

Accidents and life happen—quick action can prevent stains from setting in permanently, which makes it much more difficult to clean. Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth to absorb as much of the liquid as possible. To remove any residual staining, dampen a cotton cloth or clean paper town with clean, cold/lukewarm water. Gently blot with a damp cloth to quickly absorb the moisture from the spill. Avoid rubbing—this can force the spill deeper into the rug.

Use Rug Pads

Using an appropriate rug pad is something we highly recommend. This will prevent slipping, add cushion and comfort under your feet, and improve the durability of your rug. Choose a high-quality rug pad specifically designed for the type of rug and flooring you have. Rug pads can also aid in airflow, which prevents moisture buildup underneath the rug.

Professional Rug Cleaning

While regular vacuuming and spot cleaning are key, we highly recommend getting your rug professionally cleaned every 12-18 months if possible. There are many benefits to this such as removal of deep-seated dirt, allergens, and stubborn stains.
